Environment pollutant dispersion modeling consultant

If your company exhausts reportable contaminants outdoors, you must obtain a Certificate of Approval. DHM Engineering is a consultant providing engineering air dispersion modeling services, using AERMOD or Reg 308. It will prepare the document called ESDM and submit it on your behalf. It will deal with MOE until the C of A is issued. It will also deal with the Ministry of the Environment Compliance Orders.

Paint Storage Room and Explosion Ventin

Solvent base paints when stored in certain quantities have to be in a room specifically designed with explosion relief panels and other fire protection features. NFPA has standards governing the architectural , structural, mechanical and fire protection design. |Local fire departments follow these standards. DHM Engineering has been providing this service since 1995. It will provide complete design services, architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical and fire protection. It will apply on your behalf, to the Buildings and Fire Department for permit. It will deal with the fire department on all Compliance Orders.

Properly designed ventilation system is an effective means of controlling build-up of obnoxious fumes, temperature and humidity in a plant environment and processes. Strategies can range from capture at source with canopy hoods, intake slots, or area containment. The capture zone must be under negative pressure relative to adjacent areas. Capture distance and conveyance velocity are some very important design parameters for an effective removal system. Designs for these systems should adhere to the design guidelines published by the American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists.

 

Dust collection systems are a more specialized form of process ventilation. Besides removing dust, there are the added concerns of dust explosions and the need for fire suppression. Particulates to be removed are in various sizes. The minimum duct velocity specified in the Ontario Fire Code may not be adequate for proper entrainment and will be a cause of conveyance blockage.  Particles less than 10 micron will float and eventually deposited in near-by areas, becoming a fire hazard, if the material is combustible. If not controlled the electrical switches, disconnects may have to be changed to have dust proof rating.  Dust collection systems must meet the Ontario Fire Code and relevant NFPA Standards, such as:

 

NFPA 68 – Standard on Explosion Prevention by Deflagration Venting

NFPA 69 – Standard on Explosion Prevention Systems

NFPA 91 – Standard for Exhaust Systems for Air Conveying of Vapours, Gases, Mists and Particulate

The number of pollutant reporting and approvals required in a manufacturing plant are increasing. If your facility releases any of the listed substances to outdoors, a preliminary audit should be done to determine if any of the reporting the facility may be affected.  If you have any doubts on whether your facility needs reporting, call us. The following is a list of reporting requirements in Ontario:

 

ECA – Environmental Compliance Approval  (formerly Certificate of Approval)

Required by the Province of Ontario if any of the listed contaminants released by the Regulated Industry is equal to or exceeds the Threshold Level. Particulates, noise and smell are considered pollutants. An ESDM must be submitted with information on the facility, rate of listed substances used, how used and generated, and dispersion modelling results demonstrating compliance. Only approved computer simulation models such as AERMOD, CalPuff, and ASHRAE should be used. Approval generally takes about 6 months

 

Toxic Reduction Act (TRA), 2009,  and Ontario Regulation 455/09

Require regulated facilities to undertake toxic substance accounting to better understand the quantities of toxic substances that are used, created, transformed, destroyed, released, disposed of, transferred for recycling and contained in products. The Facility must develop a Toxic Substance Reduction Plan for each substance that meets or exceeds the Threshold Level. This Plan has to be done by a MOE registered TRA Planner. The TRA is linked to NPRI/Reg 127 fling.

Environment certificate

Environment certificate or Certificate of Approval (Air & Noise) is required if you are exhausting reportable contaminants outdoors. The C of A is issued by the Ministry of the Environment. To obtain this, you need to submit a document called ESDM to MOE. DHM Engineering is a consultant providing engineering air dispersion modeling services, using AERMOD or Reg 308 to determine if the contaminants are within MOE POI limit. It will help in design of exhaust systems if required to bring the emission rates to within MOE limit. It will then prepare the ESDM demonstrating that your plant can operate within MOE emission limits and submit on your behalf. It will deal with the application until approved.

NPRI/Reg 127 Consultan

The federal and provincial governments keep tab on the amount of pollutants released every year in Canada. NPRI (National Pollutant Release Inventory) is federal and Reg 127 is Ontario. To obtain this data, the governments require all applicable companies to file by June 1st of every year. This is law and the onus is on companies to assess whether their company is subject to reporting. If your company does not fall under the requirement, you still should file to report your status to avoid compliance orders.
